On 4 January 2006, a new EU Directive came into effect. The directive’s main purpose is to lower the need for fossil fuels and thereby lower emissions of climate-affecting greenhouse gases.

Another aim is to lower the EU countries’ dependence upon oil and other imported fuels in order to make the energy supply more secure.

An official committee has been set up by the state in order to form a response to the EU Directive. The committee proposes that Sweden implements the Directive on the basis of a new law on energy declaration of buildings. According to the proposition, all owners of buildings should, by law, be required to draw up an energy declaration whenever a building is built, sold, leased or transferred. An energy declaration will most likely influence the tenant when choosing between different premises by making apparent which premises are energy efficient and financially advantageous to rent.

Fagerhult's contribution

Fagerhult contributes to a better environment by developing more effective electric fittings. By using a modern lighting structure, energy consumption can be halved in an office building. Apart from using energy effective light sources, different types of light controls also contribute to lowered energy consumption.

Daylight controls can adjust the lighting effect to the amount of daylight entering. An office room can be divided into different zones depending on daylight access, and electric fittings in lighter zones do not need the same strength as those in darker zones. By making use of daylight in the most effective manner and by adapting the strength of artificial light, energy can be saved.

Presence controls switch lighting both on and off automatically. In accordance with the energy directive recommendations, following the final detection of human presence and with a maximum of 15 minutes delay, the light is automatically switched off. Presence reduction switches the lighting on automatically at detection. The light adjusts to a low level, at the most 20 percent of the power value. This ensures that only when there is presence the light will operate with full capacity.
